In 1917 in New Jersey, the Radium Dial Corporation employed young women to paint watch dials with luminescent radium-based paint. Compared to factory and mill work, it was a plum job: clean, convivial, not physically taxing. The dial painters were encouraged to use their lips to point the brushes. At the time, radium was thought to be harmless or even beneficial, and was used in an array of health products, from toothpaste to face cream to drinking water. But radium is deadly when ingested. Because it chemically resembles calcium, the element is easily absorbed by the bones, causing them to deteriorate while also irradiating the body from inside. After the radium girls got sick, it was found that their breath contained enough radon gas to expose X-ray film. The plight of the radium girls, poisoned by their work, set the stage for industrial safety regulations in the decades that followed, although none of them survived to see the benefits of the lawsuit they ultimately won.
