In 1891, a young Marie Skłodowska left her native Poland to complete her studies in Paris. Poland was under Russian rule, and women were not permitted to study at the university level, thus their only option was to secretly attend the underground “Floating University,” which risked imprisonment or being sent to Siberia. Both Maria and her sister Bronia attended the Floating University until Bronia left for Paris to pursue medicine, and once established there Bronia sent for Marie. In Paris Marie was devoted to her studies and her scientific work, and she was not seeking to marry—her plan was to return to Poland and teach once she completed her degree. But then she met Pierre Curie, a French scientist who was equally devoted to his own work, and they fell in love. Their romance was one of a shared vocation. He courted her with scientific research papers. Eventually he put aside his own research to join in hers. For their honeymoon, they went bicycling through the countryside of France, and when they returned, they shared a home and a laboratory, just down the street.
