In 1898 Marie Curie acquired a ton of pitchblende from Austria, which over the next four years the Curies processed and reduced to isolate two new chemical elements: first polonium, then radium. The work of isolating radium and measuring the results was incredibly precise: Pierre said that Marie was one of the only people capable of the minute measurements required for this work, which she performed with tools Pierre had invented. It was incredibly tedious, requiring an almost superhuman focus that verged on religious devotion.
