In the early 20th century, the Spiritualist movement saw scientists and intellectuals taking an interest in the occult, and especially in spirit mediums who said they could communicate with the dead. With so many newly discovered forces and scientific phenomena, it seemed possible that what people observed during séances were real things, measurable and even photographable. Pierre Curie was a follower of an Italian medium named Eusapia Palladino, whose seances were frequented by many scientists and intellectuals, despite her reputation as a charlatan. Among other things, it was said that a cold wind emanated from a hole in her head.
