In the 16th century in the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe, silver and cobalt miners frequently fell victim to a fatal respiratory illness known as “the mountain disease.” The most advanced medical theory of the time attributed the ailment to mountain dwarves who dwelled deep in the mines and had cursed the stolen ore. This theory wasn’t entirely wrong: the mineral pitchblende, a waste product of the mining process whose name comes from the German word Pechblende, or “bad luck mineral,” is highly radioactive (a term Marie Curie coined).
