After Pierre’s death, Marie sank into a long depression. Then she fell in love again—with Paul Langevin, a fellow scientist with whom she and Pierre had worked for many years. But Paul was married, and when his wife exposed the affair to the press in 1910, the resulting scandal was a perfect storm of misogyny, xenophobia, gossip, and society’s double standard for men and women. More than one duel was fought over it. It threatened Marie’s career, her reputation, even her life, and overshadowed her achievement when she was awarded an unprecedented second Nobel prize the following year. The Nobel committee even suggested that she not come in person to the awards ceremony—a suggestion she defied.
